The Mets are determined to add starting pitching this offseason, according to MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman, who lists Max Scherzer, Kevin Gausman and Robbie Ray as the club’s top picks, in that order.
Marcus Stroman is still a possibility as well.
As Heyman points out, Scherzer’s preference was the West Coast in trade talks last summer, so his level of interest in launching in New York is uncertain.
To make a deal with Scherzer, the Mets may need to convince him that the plan is to immediately compete for a title. At 37, the right is looking for such a scenario.
The Mets finished the season 11.5 games out of first place in the NL East, but owner Steve Cohen has made it clear that he is willing to invest in the right free agents to put a winning product on the field.
Joining Jacob deGrom at the top of the rotation could be attractive to Scherzer.
