Israel reports first case of new coronavirus variant detected in Africa

Variant B.1.1.529 was first detected on November 11 in Botswana, and was later also reported in South Africa and Hong Kong.

The Israeli Ministry of Health has notified this Friday the first case of the new variant of the coronavirus, B.1.1.529. The strain was detected in a citizen who returned from Malawi, located in southeastern Africa.

It is also suspected that two more people, who are currently isolated, could be carriers of the new variant. Both Israelis returned from abroad and are awaiting the test results.

All three cases are vaccinated, although health authorities are still verifying the details of their immunization, the ministry added in a statement.
