Attack on the municipal palace of Guaymas leaves 3 dead – El Financiero

An armed attack was registered tonight in the Municipal Palace of Guaymas, leaving two men and a woman dead, the Sonora Prosecutor’s Office reported.

The local authorities said that after the events the red code was activated, while they asked the population to avoid access to the first square of the city.

In its Twitter account, the prosecution added that corporations of the three orders of government are responding to the emergency.

Sonora has been the scene of bloody clashes in which factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, allies of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and a gang allied with fugitive drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero are believed to be involved, says the AP news agency. It is unknown if the shooting on Thursday is related.

On Wednesday, state authorities said they found 14 clandestine graves near Miguel Alemán, a town north of Guaymas. Prosecutors say the graves contained bones, some of them charred, and decomposing corpses, but said they cannot yet determine the number of victims.

Alfonso Durazo, governor of Sonora, condemned the events, expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

“Authorities from the three levels of government are at the scene, supporting investigations to bring those responsible to justice,” he said on his Twitter account.
