“Regarding the information that has been released today, I would like to confirm that indeed the president informed me a week ago that he had decided to reconsider my appointment as head of Banco de México”
In this context, speculations have begun to emerge, because so far there is no Official version that supports what was decided by the Chief Executive, but it was only five months that his appointment was announced which was never ratified.
Something that could explain This situation is that he entrusted Herrera with a management of federal participations before the electoral process that did not correspond to the Fiscal Coordination Law, this according to the editorial general director of The financial, Enrique Quintana in his column Coordinates.
“The versions indicate that Herrera did not comply with the instruction received, but proceeded in accordance with the Law”
According to the columnist, this would have been detected weeks after the electoral process, which triggered the annoyance of López Obrador and consequently, the withdrawal of his nomination.
Notably Herrera’s nomination had been well accepted by financial markets, but since the news was confirmed, the peso continued its downward cycle, due to the uncertainty related to the new appointment
The columnist pointed out: “If the president Lopez Obrador I’d like break the rules and intended to force Banxico to go against its own governing body based on the unilateral decisions of a governor, then yes financial markets might respond with a run, which would severely hit the financial stability from the country.”
On August 19, Arturo Herrera would appear before Senate committees to present their work plan, this as part of the ratification process.
Nevertheless, the appearance was postponed and a new date was not established to carry it out.
One of the reactions was that of the Deputy Governor of Banxico, Gerardo Esquivel Hernández, who regretted the fact, since -considered- Herrera Gutiérrez is an extraordinary public servant and a great economist.
Through your account Twitter, wrote: “Arturo is an extraordinary public servant, a great economist and an excellent person. I am very sorry that the country has missed the opportunity to have him in a position of such responsibility. Good luck in what comes. I know there will be many opportunities in the future, “he said while retweeting the message from Arturo Herrera himself confirming the withdrawal of his candidacy by the federal agent himself.
For its part, Lieutenant Governor Jonathan Heath, retweeted the message of Gerardo Esquivel, as well as that of Arturo Herrera.
The rumors about the withdrawal of the candidacy of the one who was the second Secretary of the Treasury in the López Obrador government, began very early, with two journalistic versions that revealed the fact, which occurred last August.
The confirmation came hours later, when the leader of the Morena bench (party of the President) in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, claimed it was the president who withdrew the appointment, so he is forced to promote another profile before the end of 2021.
“I consider that the former Secretary of the Treasury, Arturo Herrera, is a good elementor. A man who knows the matter and is a man who seems to me to have knowledge, but it is a decision of the Executive. And there is no appointment that is why there is no matter, “he said.
